8 Memorable Activities To Enjoy In Cape Town
Posted on December 4 2018
Everything about Cape Town, South Africa is memorable in my opinion! Just take a lazy drive and you will be ensconced in unique beauty at every turn…But, planning your itinerary with super fun activities always makes for a seamless vacation. So, read on for my favourite 8 Memorable Activities To Enjoy In Cape Town!
We were in Cape Town just over a month ago, Mike and I had both been there several times before and we had already experienced the cable car up Table Mountain and seen many of the beaches, so we wanted to fill our 5 day trip with allllll the things that we hadn’t done before.
Without further beating around the bush.
Here they are – 8 Memorable Activities To Enjoy In Cape Town – solo, with friends or as a couple:
The best, super cool, outdoorsy, cheap (some for free), bucket list-worthy things to do in Cape Town!
1.Take The Wine Tram Tour In Franschhoek
This is an absolute must! We had so much fun on our wine tasting tour and enjoyed every minute of chugging along in the quaintest little tram you will ever see! We went home with quite a few bottles of delicious wine too…
I wrote a full post on Taking The Wine Tram Tour In Cape Town, check it out for all the deets!
2. Visit The V&A Waterfront Day Or Night
This is an obvious choice, and yes, we had both been to the waterfront before, but it just never gets old. We went with friends one evening for dinner, the weather was summertime perfection, with not a breath of wind, which, if you know Cape Town, is quite remarkable.
We enjoyed a relaxed dinner while we watched the sundowner cruises, packed with people, come and go from the harbour. The lights were twinkling, everyone was in a stellar mood and it was an all-round great evening! You can take a ride on the Cape Wheel if the weather permits.
A few days later we went back during the day to get a look at the tug boats, and have a cozy lunch, the weather wasn’t quite as warm this time, but that didn’t matter one bit.
3. Mooch* To Laurensford Market On A Sunday
Situated on the lovely Laurensford Wine Farm (more wine tasting opportunities for those of you who like that kinda thang), this is predominantly a food market – you will find yummy things for your tummy here. Such as: wraps and pitas filled with healthy goodness, samoosas galore, cupcakes of every flavour, fudge like you’ve never seen before, fresh fruit and veg, ice cream, homemade bread, and so much more! There are a few stands here that sell clothes and hats, jewellery etc, but not many.
If you’re keen on a nik-nac market, you’re looking for Route 44 Market in Stellenbosch, which also has a huge food section with everything under the sun that you could be after! This market is open Saturday and Sunday.
*To mooch – is to move gently on foot.

4. See The Simonstown Penguins
Is there anything cuter on this earth than a penguin? This question should be met with a resounding “No”. Their adorable-ness is just undeniable. I mean, that little waddle just kills me.
Try not to go on the weekend…Unless you love crowds, or it’s out of season.
Just a gentle reminder that this is their home and they are wild creatures – give them their space.
5. Take A Drive Up Signal Hill At Night
Because it’s pretty. Very pretty, and you deserve to see this loveliness…
After our dinner out with friends at the V & A Waterfront, they took us up Signal Hill. Neither of us really knew what to expect and we were so surprised by how much we could see of the city and the beauty of the lights of Cape Town at night.
6. Enjoy The Mountain From The Other Side (AKA Blouberg)
Most of us “touri” see Table Mountain from the “waterfront side” of Cape Town. This was the first time I had seen it from Bloubergstrand. It’s really gorgeous from this side too! And the ocean is a clear aquamarine colour – perfect photo ops!
Plus there are plenty-plus restaurants and bars to choose from and you can take a leisurely walk by the sea after your meal.
By the by, if you decide to eat at Primi Piatti and you like vegetarian pizza, I’d recommend the spinach and feta – it was yuuuum. And…take a jacket, it gets windy here and it’s the icy kind.
7. Drive Chapman’s Peak
One of the worlds most scenic drives! Chappies toll road is a gateway between Cape Town city centre and the south peninsula & Cape Point Route. Constructed during the first world war, this is a fun activity that you won’t want to miss!
You can drive, sightsee, cycle, run, hike, photograph or join an event in and around Chapman’s Peak Drive.
Website – chapmanspeakdrive.co.za – make sure the drive is open (sometimes it’s closed due to very high wind-speed, see pic above for evidence) and to check the current toll price.
8. Say “Hey” To The Seals In Hout Bay
Hout Bay is a sweet little town with its own harbour, a couple of great foodie spots, ice cream and seals!
The seals will come right up to you, sometimes they will jump right out of the water and onto the jetty, especially if you have a sardine for them from their “handlers”. Just be aware that if you take part in feeding the seals the handlers will expect a tip from you.
We had calamari and chips from Mariner’s Wharf, and then an ice cream from the little kiosk around the corner. Not our normal lunch for sure, but when on holiday…One must indulge.
