Here we go with 16 Reasons To Visit Afriski Lesotho Part 2!!
#9 THE WALKS / HIKES
The Maluti mountains are situated above 3000m and are the perfect training ground if you’re considering hiking up Mt Kilamanjaro or doing event training. And for those of us who don’t have such lofty inspirations (hi! I’m not so lofty), a more gentle hike is also super enjoyable. You can choose guided or self-guided hikes, but be sure to always sign in with the desk before you set off, and never hike alone.
Sky Restaurant will supply you with a packed lunch for your hike so that you can stop off at a pretty spot and refuel along the way.
#10 THE PAINTED SKIES
While there’s no guarantee that you will see skies like we did the first day we were at Afriski, I can promise you it will be pretty either way.
But while out on a gentle walk to check out the cabins up close and snap some pics, the sky turned from clear blue to what looked like a painters canvas that had a bright blue background and swirling, looping, almost dancing white brush strokes that covered the sky for 180°.
I have never seen anything like it, and it stopped me in my tracks for a little bit, while I took many photos. But the real thing was much vaster and even more beautiful.
#11 THE HOT CHOCOLATE AND COFFEE
Cafe Gondola serves a mean hot chocolate (and Michael would like you to know, an excellent cup of coffee!) which we enjoyed probably a few too many times while we were there!! Soaking up the warmth of the sun on the wooden deck, watching the skiers and snowboarders come down the mountain and sipping on a delicious hot chocolate, yes please, I’m in!
#12 THE FROZEN DAMS AND SPRAY
Ok, so when we arrived on Friday afternoon, the massive spray that sprays water into the dam was happily spraying away, like it should. By Saturday lunch time it was frozen solid. Shows it got a little colder overnight! Made for a really beautiful sight though.
And when the temps really drop, which I do believe will be happening soon, the dams will freeze over too. I’m told they don’t offer skating on the dams, and I think this is something they should look into!
#13 THE KIDS ACTIVITIES
Winter or summer activities are available for your kiddos so you can hit the slopes, enjoy a hot cuppa on the deck or take a nap, and know your kids are occupied.
#14 THE TACO SOUP
The Taco Soup is a tomato soup with a little chilli which is SO TASTY in its own right, but then add a few squares of avocado and two crunchy tacos on top, and you’ve got yourself a real winner. I had this on our last night and I was in heaven. Loved it! Mike had the bolognese which he enjoyed. And the first night I had the veggie burger with sweet potato fritters – flavours were good. Mike had the cheese, bacon and avocado burger which he said was great.
#15 THE MALVA PUDDING
Sky Restaurant serves an EXCELLENT Malva Pudding With Homemade Custard!!! You must try it! The end.
Just kidding, it was sweet and sticky and toffee/caramelish, but not too sickly sweet, you know? The cake was moist and melt-in-your-mouth-delicious, with a generous bowl of warm, homemade pouring custard on the side which it’s compulsory to drench the pudding with so that every mouthful has a generous helping of both! I’m dying just thinking about it. I thank the heavens that Afriski is a long way from home! Or do I?
Moral of the story: Try the Malva Pudding, it’s SO GOOD!
#16 SANI PASS
Drive home down Sani Pass. It’s very beautiful and a real experience, I felt like I was on the set of a Lord of The Rings movie! The landscape is quite spectacular! Check out my full post: Pros And Cons Of Driving Sani Pass.
However, I do not advise taking Sani Pass if you don’t have a very sturdy vehicle and a very competent driver who knows how to drive on really loose and sandy, rocky, narrow dirt roads with hair-pin turns for the first 2kms (feels like 10kms!) after you go through the Lesotho boarder post. You are literally driving on the very edge of a mountain and there’s not a lot of room for error.
If you’re considering driving UP Sani Pass, I would urge you to take a 4×4 vehicle.
