Day Trip To Cape Point And Cape Of Good Hope

Cape Point is the south-western point of Africa and it is where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.  It is beautiful beyond words and makes an exciting day trip for couples, families or friends in Cape Town, South Africa. A Day Trip To Cape Point And Cape Of Good Hope is unforgettable!

The treacherous rocky reefs surrounding Cape Point are the cause of 26 recorded shipwrecks – and likely many more. Sea cliffs rise more than 800 feet above the rolling, crashing waves.

Just knowing you are standing on the very, very south-western most tip of Africa, where two powerful oceans collide, is quite something!

The drive to get to the Cape Point nature reserve is picturesque, and you will mosey through the quaint little towns of Hout Bay – famous for their seals, and Simons Town – famous for their gorgeous penguins.

There is an entrance fee to get in to the Cape Point nature reserve, which you can google before you set off.

A variety of guided tours are available too, they range in price per person depending on the tour you choose.  You can also take a Cape Peninsula scenic helicopter flight!  Check out Get Your Guide for more info on these tours.

Stop along the way for coffee and a snack, or a delicious meal.  We decided to go straight to Cape Point, as the weather was a little gloomy and we weren’t sure if it was clearing up or getting worse.

Turns out, we couldn’t have timed it more perfectly!  When we got to the base of the steps the sky had cleared and the ocean was the most beautiful combination of a deep, royal blue out to sea changing to a bright, crystal clear aqua-marine close to shore.

Such incredible, rugged beauty!

Friendly warning: it’s quite a hike to the top, and then quite a walk to the point.  It’s very safe and there are steps all the way up and then a nice wide path to the point, but you will need tennis shoes, and if it’s windy at all, I would suggest a warm jacket just in case.

Almost the whole way up there are panoramic, breathtaking views, I stopped every 2 – 5 seconds to take photos! 😉  To get all the way to the point, take in the views, and come back down again took us over an hour.  it’s something you don’t want to rush, so make sure you have enough time to fully enjoy it and take it all in.

We wanted to check out Cape Of Good Hope on our way back, which was lovely, but if you’ve been to Cape Point already, then you might be slightly underwhelmed.  There is another climb here which we didn’t do, that takes you to the top of Cape Of Good Hope and I imagine the views would be stunning there too.
