4 Of The Best Gluten-Free Eateries In Cape Town
Posted on September 9 2019
As a population, we have never been more conscious of the food we are putting in our bodies. Whether you eat gluten free every now and then, or you have an intolerance to gluten, we’ve got you covered while you’re in Cape Town!
I definitely have travel on the brain! As December and our Asia travel plans fast approach (just 3 months to go!!), I find myself thinking about the food we will eat during our travels to make sure we stay on track with our healthy lifestyle, and I know I’m not alone…
The percentage of those following vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets have gradually risen over the years and the next generation is driving that change.
Millennials and those in Generation Z are not only thinking about their diet more carefully, but they are also making travel more of a priority in their lives (I’m so on board with this!!), with some figures showing 39% of them wouldn’t take a job without some form of travel option. And those factors have increased the need to know where you can eat to continue your diet or “lifestyle” while you’re travelling the globe.
Here we are going to focus on the magnificent South African city of Cape Town and feature 4 of the best gluten-free eateries you will find there.
There is so much to do in Cape Town and the surrounding areas, AND there are some fantastic places to eat for those of you who are gluten-free, or just health conscious.
Here are 4 Of The Best Gluten-Free Eateries In Cape Town! Enjoy.
1.The Raptor Room
79 Roeland St, Zonnebloem
This bold, bright eatery is a fantastic place to come when you are in Cape Town. The restaurant itself is a delightful blend of modern and traditional, with plenty of colours and some conspicuous dinosaurs that you just can’t miss.
The menu is well put-together and caters for lots of different dietary needs, but the great thing is that all the dishes are clearly marked on the menu so those who are on a particular diet can stick to it, without fear of making a misstep. The music is great fun too and it all makes for a memorable experience!
2. Masala Dosa
167 Long St
A charming restaurant on a famous street in the centre of this fantastic city. The cuisine and menu are naturally gluten-free but if you are unsure about any of your choices, the staff are hugely helpful and knowledgeable – so don’t hesitate to ask.
There are plenty of excellent shops and touristy things to see in the vicinity of Masala Dosa, which gives you two good reasons to head to this excellent eatery.
3. Mango Ginger
27 Lower Main Rd, Observatory
This acclaimed bakery is a fantastic place to come for breakfast, brunch or lunch and boasts some of the best burgers in the city.
There are vegan burgers, with rocket, tomatoes and avocado, plus lots of salads on offer. Every single burger comes with the option of a gluten-free bun, for a small charge.
The staff are well presented and extremely helpful, so if you aren’t sure what to order or want to know the dietary benefits, just ask one of the team, they will be delighted to help out and they really know their stuff!!
4. A Tavola
Library Square, Wilderness Rd, Claremont
If you are following a strictly gluten-free plan, you might not expect an Italian restaurant to be the place to go. And yet, this wonderful restaurant in Cape Town specialises in gluten-free meals, with a large percentage of the menu available to you.
Because of that, A Tavola is consistently rated as one of the best gluten-free restaurants in the city.
All of the pasta dishes on the menu can be turned into gluten-free options, for a small charge, while the Antipasto Misto, Caprese di Burrata, and Insalata di Formaggio di Capra are all magnificent choices for the discerning diner.
One particular favourite of ours is the Sogliola al Forno, which is grilled Namibian sole fish, served with some vegetables and a very special caper butter. This is a dish not to be missed!!
