House Update Vol. 6 – Bedrooms
In this post I share photos from the bedrooms in our recently completed farmhouse-chic home. We’ve been living here for a few months now, and I think the bedrooms are looking and feeling pretty homey! Read on for House Update Vol. 6 – Bedrooms…
It seems odd and a bit disingenuous not to mention the chaos that gripped our province (KZN) this past week. I have lived in South Africa for a little over 5 years now and have always felt safe (perhaps a false sense of security sometimes, but still), and I must admit the past week has brought anxiety and uncertainty.
Today, one week from when the protesting, rioting and looting began, all seems calm. Our residential streets and housing estates are still being manned by private security and residents, but the gunshots and shouting are no longer, now we hear the birds chirping happily in our little forest.
We truly hope the worst is over and that this beautiful country can find peace and stability.
With that said, I’ll get back to my latest House Update Vol. 6 – Bedrooms!
I’ll be sharing the Master Bedroom and Guest Bedroom photos in this post as those are the bedrooms that we have furnished.
If you’ve been following along with our home build from the start, you’ll know that we have our house on the market and so we decided not to put extra money into furnishing all the bedrooms.
There are 4 bedrooms in this home, one of which we would most likely turn into a study if we were staying for a good while.
Luckily over our wedding weekend, some good friends were gracious enough to lend us another bed so that our family had somewhere to sleep, lol.
Here we go – House Update Vol. 6 – Bedrooms:
Let’s start with the Master Bedroom
I really love this room, and I hate to say it but the photos just don’t do it justice.
You need to be in the space to appreciate the vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, the flow from the open-plan bathroom and the exposed brick wall behind the bed.
And the view out over the biggest greenbelt in our estate.
I’m pretty partial to the gorgeous shade of teal that I chose to paint the accent walls too!
(It’s “Dulux – Gravel Pit” for anyone that’s interested. Don’t let the name put you off, I’d like to know who chooses the names for paints!)
Because the walls in the rest of the house are white, I wanted to do something different in the master to make it special.
I love the way the white beams and wardrobes look so fresh against the teal wall.
I chose throw cushions that would pull the teal and white of the walls onto the bed, and a dash of another happy colour was needed which is why the bold floral cushion seemed perfect.
My sister-in-law gave me the beautiful pink orchid at my bridal brunch, and I think it brings a little softness and looks so lovely in this room!
And now, the Guest Bedroom
I’ve always thought that the absolute best jumping off point when designing a space is to start with a piece, or a colour, or a feeling that you absolutely love, and then build the space around that.
Which is exactly what I was able to do with this room.
The story behind this guest bedroom starts with the GORGEOUS Persian rug that Mike’s brother gave us when they were packing up and moving house.
It has shades of deep teal, dark grey, sunny-mustard yellow and a soft pinkish-beige.
I’ve never seen a Persian rug in these colours before and we absolutely love it.
I adore anything Middle Eastern in origin – I absolutely love the patterns, details and designs that they use in their furniture and soft furnishings (and their jewellery!). They’re just so beautiful.
I think the incorporation of a few of these beautiful peaces in an otherwise western home adds character, warmth and personality to a space.
All that being said, if this were our forever home (or even our home for a few years), I would do a whole lot more with this guest bedroom – it needs something above the bed and I’d repaint the side tables and get new bedside lamps.
But, considering the only items that I bought new for this room were the grey-blue curtains and the yellow cushion, I think it looks pretty cozy and welcoming!
