When the sun goes down in the heart of Guangzhou City, China, take a walk across the bridge in Haizhu Square and behold the glorious Pearl River Lights that form striking images stretching from building to building and as far as the eye can see!
Approximately 2400 km, Pearl River is the third longest river in China. It is named “Pearl” River because there is a rocky island in the middle of the river which, over many, many years has been made smooth by the water passing over it, and looks like a huge pearl.
The lights change every few minutes to form new images and colour combinations.
If you have the time you should take the Pearl River Cruise which has become a popular activity for tourists visiting Guangzhou. They have day cruises and night cruises.
There are 3 wharfs on Pearl River:
- Tianzi Wharf
- Dashatou Wharf
- Xidi Wharf (The least popular with tourists as it is further away from Haizhu Square)
All of which offer a buffet meal to enjoy while you cruise.
Whether you decide to take a relaxing river boat ride, or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll over the bridge, it’s an absolute MUST to see the night lights!

Most trips have a stand-out memory or two. A special moment that you know you won’t ever forget. The evening we saw the Pearl River Lights In Guangzhou China was a moment like that for me.
Maybe it was because I had no expectations…no real idea in my mind of what we were about to see. I just knew we were taking a walk over the bridge to see the river at night. I was excited, but I had no clue of the prettiness that I was about to take in.
Side Note: This was our last night in China, our last night of what was predominantly a work trip, and we were tired with a capital T. We had SO much fun the whole week, but I have never walked so much in all my life!
If you’re going to China, take some comfortable walking shoes!! (Or buy some there – they have some great deals!! More on that in my Shopping On Beijing Street post!) You’re going to need them.
There are of course plenty of taxis, buses and underground subway stations. But you will still be doing quite a bit of walking in the subway stations and when you get to wherever you’re going, so be warned.
(We only took taxis and used the subway – taking a taxi is more expensive, but can be quicker if you’re pushed for time.)
Needless to say, after dinner on our last night there, we were both a little sluggish heading out again for another walk. Um, yay?
But it was SO worth it. I think I had to be dragged away, still trying to get one last happy snap.
Funny first: A Chinese man took a photo of us taking this selfie, and was so happy with himself that he showed us his photo with pride, it wasn’t bad.
Take it from someone who’s seen it in person, if you’re in China, you will absolutely love the sparkly beauty of the Pearl River Lights In Guangzhou China at night, make sure you get there!
I mean, how pretty is that? Can we go back now? I want to try the River Cruise and dinner buffet this time.
Have you been to China? Where did you go and what did you do, see, eat, experience? I want to know!! Tell me in the comments.
