What I’m Currently Reading
I love reading. And I’m definitely a real-life book kinda person. Kindles are great for travel or if you get stuck without a book, but an actual book that you can hold in your hands, and turn the actual pages, is SO much better in my opinion!
I’m not usually one for setting goals or New Years resolutions, but this year for some reason, I’m finding the idea of goal setting quite inspiring, and a little more structure to my life has been comforting lately.
So, one of my recent goals has been to read more, and with this recent re-discovery of real life actual books, I’ve been reading a LOT more!
Especially reading before bed has been a massive help in creating a bed-time routine that improves my sleep hugely, as opposed to reading a kindle or e-reader of any kind as you’re just once again, looking at a screen, which I already do for so many hours of my day.
I recently became a member of our local library, and I can take out 10 books every 3 weeks, which is way too many for me, I’m a fairly slow reader, ha ha.
I’m LOVING IT.
If you have a local library in your area, I highly recommend it. The fee to join is SO minimal, and books are SO expensive to buy these days. It really is a wonderful thing.
Which is what inspired me to share What I’m Currently Reading…
In case any of you need book recommendations, coz, let’s face it, there are SO MANY books out there, it’s nice to have a little insight before you make your next pick.
Here we go with What I’m Currently Reading:
Some of these books I have recently finished, some I’m in the middle of, and two I have yet to read, but they have great reviews so I’m excited to get stuck in.
HER NAME WAS ROSE by Claire Allan
I really loved this one. It’s a mystery / suspense thriller and I was hooked from page one! I read this book in under a week, and for me, that’s quick. If I had been on holiday I’m sure I would have read it in a couple of days. So gripping, and quite an unusual storyline which I really liked.
THE ROAD TRIP by Beth O’Leary
The perfect vacation read! I don’t think I’ve ever devoured a book so fast. Such a sweet story, really funny in parts, and so relatable. No deep thinking necessary, the ideal read for when you just want to switch off and be mindless ha ha.
THE RIPPLE EFFECT by Anne Jones
A book about finding inner peace and harmony. I’m still reading this, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far. It’s about taking responsibility for ourselves, improving self-esteem, healing emotions and releasing anxieties, to become happier with ourselves and our world.
She goes into the power of meditation and balancing the chakras. So, if you find that kind of thing interesting, you will enjoy this book.
THE SHADOW EFFECT by Deepak Chopra, Debbie Ford & Marianne Williamson
About illuminating the hidden power of your true self. If you’re familiar with these authors you’ll know this is going to be a power-house book. I’m still in the first section – written by Deepak Chopra, and it’s definitely on the heavy side. Takes quite a bit of deep thinking and self-analysing. But I’m pretty sure it’ll be worth it.
This book is all about how to access the darker side of yourself which exists in all of us, the shadow side, which we all tend to want to ignore or push down. But instead, this book encourages you to embrace your dualistic nature, in order to stop hurting yourself and those closest to you so you don’t fall short of your potential.
THE THINGS YOU CAN SEE ONLY WHEN YOU SLOW DOWN by Haemin Sunim
How to be calm in a busy world. I have read and re-read this book over and over again. My mom gave me this book as a gift about 5 or 6 years ago. And I can honestly say these short stories and quotes mean something entirely different to me each year. Definitely one that’s worth buying and keeping forever. Also makes such a great gift.
EAT PRAY LOVE by Elizabeth Gilbert
I’m sure if you haven’t read this book, you have seen the movie! I’d encourage you though, to read the book – it’s truly one of a kind. Not only amusing and a serious page turner, but you’ll connect to the writer instantly, and learn so much through her self-discovery.
I decided to re-read Eat Pray Love now as we’re heading to Bali in just over a weeks time – so it seemed timely to re-read Liz’s adventure as she ends her year of travel with 4 months in Bali – and I have to say, I might be enjoying it even more this time around!
Despite being a newly committed library member, I did buy two new books for our Bali trip (From Bargain Books for R70 each! Such a good deal!) – I wanted to have at least two actual, page-turning books with me as well as my Kindle.
So the next two books I’ll be reading soon, on holiday, in Bali. That doesn’t seem real!
Check out our travel adventures, my healthy recipes and home decor on the blog.
We have been waiting to go on this trip since we got married almost 2 years ago. Now that it’s finally here I can’t quite believe it.
Anyway, the two books I bought to take with me are:
THE APPEAL by Janice Hallett
This book has really great reviews for being a completely original murder mystery which follows a community rallying around a sick child – but when escalating lies lead to a dead body, everyone is a suspect. I’m so excited to get stuck in!
ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN by Lucy Diamond
This looks like a sweet story of a mother and daughter, with a little intrigue – here’s a bit about it from the writeup: For Lara and her daughter Eliza, it has always been just the two of them. But when Eliza turns eighteen and wants to connect with her father, Lara is forced to admit a secret that she has been keeping from her daughter her whole life.
I’ll be sure to let you know what I think of these two books after we get home from Bali!
